While still engaged in the above described mission, Elder Marsh learned by mail that as the Three Witnesses to the Book of Mormon had selected the Twelve Apostles as appointed by revelation (D&C 18:26-39), his name had been the eleventh chosen.

Joseph Smith had assembled the veterans of Zion's Camp on Saturday, 14 February 1835, and witnesses Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris had named as apostles the following men: Lyman E. Johnson, Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, Orson Hyde, David W. Patten, Luke S. Johnson, William E. McLellin, John F. Boynton, Orson Pratt, William Smith, Thomas B. Marsh, and Parley P. Pratt. Of those named all but three-Boynton, McLellin, and Marsh-had been tested by the wrenching trials of Zion's Camp. Marsh, already in Missouri on the "receiving end" of the camp, had no opportunity to join.

Elder Marsh arrived in Kirtland, 25 April 1835, from his mission having traveled through various communities from Missouri to Ohio. On his arrival he discovered that all of the brethren who had been chosen as apostles of Jesus Christ (himself and Orson Pratt excepted), had received their ordinations and blessings. On 26 April he was ordained and blessed by Oliver Cowdery:

Dear Brother-You are to be a minister of righteousness, and to this ministry and apostleship you are now to be ordained; and may all temporal and spiritual blessings attend you. Your sins are forgiven you, and you are to go forth and preach the everlasting Gospel. You shall travel from kingdom to kingdom and from nation to nation. Angels shall bear thee up, and thou shalt be instrumental in bringing thousands of the redeemed of the Lord to Zion. Sealed by President David Whitmer. Even so. Amen. 35
